Eating Out Gluten Free - 5 Tips To Eat Out Without The Gluten
Eating out gluten free can be a tough thing to deal with. First you have the bread at the table, then all the gluten that you can see in the meals.
But there are a number of different types of gluten that you may not know about that could be sneaking into your meal.
Below are my top 5 tips for eating out gluten free. These tips will help you plan a successful trip out to the restaurant and won't leave you singing the blues afterward. Let's get right to them.
1) - Don't Be Afraid To Ask Questions
This is the #1 tip because many people who are eating out gluten free just try and figure it out on their own.
These days many restaurants will have special items that they can make for you, or they may be able to just let you know what is and what is not gluten free.
2) - Be Very Familiar With The Gluten Free Foods
This is where your background knowledge comes into play. If you know what kinds of food you can eat you will be able to look through the menu much easier. Keep in mind tip number 1 if you have any doubts.
3) - Be Cautious, Not Just Italian Foods Have Gluten
You may be going out for a steak dinner, but guess what many of the restaurants (including my fav steak spot The Keg) actually marinade their steaks and many of these marinades contain...
You guessed it, Gluten. This is just one example, there are many other restaurants that will hide different types of foods that contain gluten in places that you may not expect.
4) - Let The Restaurant Know You Want A Gluten Free Meal
This is a bit like point number one. Except taking it to a bit higher level. Call the restaurant before you go there and ask them if they have a gluten free meal.
Then let your server know, and sometimes even ask to speak with the chef and let them know that you can't have any gluten in your meal.
5) - Enjoy The Experience
Ok, I know this is not a tip that will help you avoid gluten. But it is a tip that I wish I knew when I first ate gluten free.
You know I used to go out and be so worried about what I was eating and then when it got to the table I was so worried about what was in it that I forgot to enjoy the experience...
Which is what eating out is all about, and eating out gluten free is no different.
