Good Fats Vs. Bad Fats

Good fats and bad fats are one of the main components of the human body’s cell membranes are fats. Fats are an extremely important part of the human body. Something that you cant live without, even if some of the beautiful models in the world don’t believe that. It is a fact that the body needs fats to survive.

That being said, chomping into a piece of fried chicken isn’t going to get you what you need. There are good fats and bad fats out there, and believe it or not the good fats actually assist your body in losing the bad fats. And the bad fats are the ones that hang around your waist.

I cringe every time I hear so called "health experts" claiming that a low-fat diet is the key to good health, weight loss, and prevention of degenerative diseases. Restriction of any one macronutrient (protein, carbs, or fat) in your diet works against what your body needs and can only lead to problems.

So What Is The Difference

Well typically good fats are the fats that are unprocessed and bad fats are the hydrogenated, highly processed fats that clog the arteries. The good fats are called poly-saturate and some saturate fats, and the bad one are called trans fats.

How To Tell The Difference

Well that’s is the hard part. All marketing these days aims at making things fat free or tells you that they are trans fat free. One thing to look for right off the top is the word Hydrogenated. Check out the ingredient list and if this is on it, put it back on the shelf. Really, please do that. If you get one thing from this page please make it that.

Here is a list of some good fats and that will help. Please take a minute to look through it. Also consider supplementing with a fish oil supplement. It’s a great way to add some good fats to your diet. Check out this page for more details on getting omega-3 into your diet.

Good Fats
Extra Virgin Olive Oil – Make sure you choose the “Extra Virgin”
Coconut Oils – Great for cooking with
Dark Bittersweet Chocolate – Not your typical candy bar
Avocados – These have great nutrients in them as well
Fatty Fish Oils – The best source of Omega-3
Nuts – Choose the Raw or Dry Roasted Variety
Flax Seeds – Try adding these to your cereal in the morning
Other Seeds – Try Pumpkin, Sunflower and Sesame seeds as well

Trans and Hydrogenated

Hydrogenated oils are industrially produced oils subjected to extremely high pressure and temperature, with added industrial solvents such as hexane for extraction, and have a metal catalyst added to promote the artificial hydrogenation, followed by bleaching and deodorizing agents. Stay as far away from these as possible, They’ve been linked to obesity, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and more.

This may sound like a rant, but it is very important that we all understand that this stuff is killing our bodies. Some other trans fats are your typical fast foods and junk foods. You know the stuff you get at Mcdonalds and Burger King. But also the stuff that you can get in the grocery store. Rather than go into a big long list of these bad fats let us explain what they do.

These hydrogenated oils cause inflammation inside of your body, which signals the cholesterol to form in your arteries as a healing agent on artery walls. Trans Fats and hydrogenated oil = inflammation = clogged arteries. This is the reason why heart disease has exploded since this trans fats have become such a huge aspect of the modern day food supply.

The last point we want to make on these hydrogenated fats is to let you know that companies are starting to phase out the use of hydrogenated oils in processed foods. They are not replacing them with good oils but with highly refined cheap vegetable oils. These are still heavily processed oils using high heat, solvents, deodorizers, and bleaching agents. Even refined oils are known to produce inflammation in your body. Make sure you stick with the good fats and avoid the highly processed foods that are wreaking havoc on todays society. Your body will love you for it.
