Interval Training is Ideal for Improving Your Cardiovascular Fitness
Interval training is a great way to spice up you workout routines. It is the kind of workout that will greatly increase your cardiovascular fitness as well as your strength, flexibility and core.
Interval training has greatly increased in popularity over the last couple of years, as it has become widespread knowledge that it works very well.
Ok, So What Is It?
Intervals are exercises that involves the person to get to near maximum levels of exertion followed by a recovery period at a lower intensity.
It is repeated over and over again. This bouts of cardiovascular fitness at near maximum levels increases your recovery time and how your body gets oxygen to its muscles.
Why is This Important For Athletes
It is pretty obvious that most sports are done in intervals, sprinting, stopping, running backwards, driving, shuffling etc. It is really important to add this kind of training into your workout routines. Train like you play!
What is The Big Difference
Normal cardio involves jogging for a certain amount of time or distance, and then stopping. While this is good and will work for your most fitness goals, by doing tings differently you can improve your results.
A easy example of intervals is "sprint backs". You find a distance you would like to sprint (50 meters is a good starting point).
Sprint the fifty meters and walk back. The walk back will allow you time to recover. Then just repeat a number of times to get a workout you will feel good about completing.
How It Works
Interval training combine the body's 2 energy-producing systems: these systems are called the aerobic and the anaerobic
The aerobic system is the system that helps to allow you to walk or run over multiple miles. This aerobic system uses oxygen to convert carbs into energy.
The anaerobic systemis quite different. This system on the other hand, draws energy from carbs that are stored in your muscles.
Examples of when the anerobic system would be used for interval training are short bursts of activity such as sprinting, jumping training (plyometrics) or muscle building with weights.
Basically interval training combines these two into one super packed workout, that is able to shed the pounds without burning through your muscles as a fuel source.
Less Time
You can also shorten your workout routines using interval training. This is because you wont need to spend hours on a treadmill to get the same calorie burning.
It will also increase your strength, and your recovery rate. This is because the shorter amount of time at a higher intensity will also do you more good than longer cardio sessions at 65 or 70% of your max heart rate.
